“The Thursday Murder Club” By Richard Osman is so many adjectives at once; Delightful, lovely, lighthearted, self-aware, geriatric, and the list could go on and on because this novel was genius period (not even factoring that this is Osman’s debut novel)。  As an entry into the crime/mystery genre this novel is novel。 Chalk full of light-hearted humour and geriatric shenanigans you won’t want to put this book down, I didn’t。 And let’s be honest Osman doesn’t try to glorify his characters no t “The Thursday Murder Club” By Richard Osman is so many adjectives at once; Delightful, lovely, lighthearted, self-aware, geriatric, and the list could go on and on because this novel was genius period (not even factoring that this is Osman’s debut novel)。  As an entry into the crime/mystery genre this novel is novel。 Chalk full of light-hearted humour and geriatric shenanigans you won’t want to put this book down, I didn’t。 And let’s be honest Osman doesn’t try to glorify his characters no they are flawed as are all humans but they know they are flawed and they rock it anyway。 There are several points in the book where the protagonists attempt to be “woke” but they always fall generations short and that’s okay because at least they are making an attempt (if only all of the elderly were as flexible with their outdated views to at least realize that their views are outdated)。 One of my favorite examples comes from page 50:  “I am not a vegan and have no intention of ever becoming one, but I still feel like it’s something that should be encouraged。 I read that if mankind doesn’t stop eating meat, there will be mass starvation by 2050。 With Respect, I am nearly eighty, and so this won’t be my problem, but I do hope they sort it out。” This gem of a line is delivered by Joyce who brings a first person perspective through use of diary entries。 Worthwhile note: Only Joyce’s perspective is presented this way; most of the book is written in third following our four ageing protagonists while they wreak havoc and solve crime, in that order。  Joyce is also my favorite。 I know these other reviews go on and on about Elizabeth and it’s true Elizabeth is a powerful lioness goddess who deserves to be praised (I wish she were real I’d adopt her as my grandma)。 But Joyce brings a light, bubbly, kind of space cadet vibe to her narrative。 The thing is Joyce (she even speaks to this in her diary) knows way more than she lets on, she sees everything but says nothing。 Most of all Joyce is kind and welcoming, Elizabeth is the “leader” of the TMC but Joyce is the delightful glue that holds it all together。  In this book you should expect silly escapades, big laughs, and devastating tears; “The Thursday Murder Club” is so genuine, and human it’s just absolutely brillant Osman better give me a follow-up I am not ready to let these characters go。  Go read this book, read it now I don’t just recommend this book I DEMAND that you read it。 7/5 Stars because this is my review and I can give it as many stars as I want。  。。。more

Given it a 4 stars。 If Goodreads allowed half stars it would be 4。5。 A great book and after a bit of a lull in my reading at the start of this year, I was hooked! Fantastically written and full of charming characters。

Karen

Charming debut novel。 Four elderly sleuths living in a retirement village solve two (actually four) crimes with wit, panache and a dash of sheer fortitude。 I loved it!! I listened to the audio version and the narration was top notch。

This book is advertised as a cozy mystery and the description is spot on。 Like most British drama, in “The Thursday Murder Club”, the story and characters are more important than action。 Quaint language that is very British in style, this book wraps you in a cloak of words to be treasured。 My favorite quote from the books is “In life, you have to learn to count the good days。 You have to tuck them in your pocket and carry them around with you。” If you are looking for car chases, gunfire, and mad This book is advertised as a cozy mystery and the description is spot on。 Like most British drama, in “The Thursday Murder Club”, the story and characters are more important than action。 Quaint language that is very British in style, this book wraps you in a cloak of words to be treasured。 My favorite quote from the books is “In life, you have to learn to count the good days。 You have to tuck them in your pocket and carry them around with you。” If you are looking for car chases, gunfire, and mad mayhem, then this is not the book for you。 If you enjoy a picturesque setting, quirky characters, and a twisted storyline, then snatch this one up。The Thursday Murder Club features a delightful cast of aging characters residing in an upscale British retirement community who spend hours each week working to solve “cold cases。” Joyce is the newest resident and newest member who has been brought in after one of the original members had a stroke and was moved to the nursing section。 She is a retired nurse with a great eye for detail。 Elizabeth is the mastermind behind the group。 Clues indicate that she was once a government agent。 Ibrahim is a retired psychiatrist。 He brings to the group knowledge of maps and routes。 The fourth member of the group is “Red Ron” known for his flaming red hair in his younger days。 Ron is loud, boisterous and was a trade unionist in his heyday。 The TMC springs into action when an active murder case lands right in their community。 Working with local police, the crew investigate the crime while uncovering several other crimes along the way。As I read the book, I thought that it would make a terrific movie only to discover that Steven Spielberg has beaten me to the rights! In my mind, I was casting Helen Mirren as Elizabeth and Bill Nighy as Ibraham。 Still was working on the remainder of the cast。 Guess I can put that aside now。 。。。more

I really wanted this like this book。 A group of 4 retirees meeting every Thursday trying to crack the case on unsolved murders? Sounds interesting! Unfortunately, it wasn’t。 While I enjoyed the 4 main characters at the retirement home, I felt no connection to them。 I wasn’t rooting for them。 I was only rooting to get to the end of the book。 The story wasn’t thrilling, I wasn’t on the edge of my seat and I was honestly confused as to what was going on at several parts of the book。 Add in a detect I really wanted this like this book。 A group of 4 retirees meeting every Thursday trying to crack the case on unsolved murders? I loved this book! The quickest I’ve read a book in a long, long time。 It’s a Sunday afternoon, warm hug of a murder story with elements of Midsummer Murders。 It’s cute and funny with likeable characters and tear jerker moments。

I enjoyed this book - quite an easy read with big lettering and large pages。A lot of different characters and names so sometimes its hard to follow。 Loved the twists and turns and a fun, murder mystery book would recommend!

I love crime novels。 I have loved them ever since I was a kid。 But this one is a gem。 The characters are so well written and contoured。 The plot is intricate, but doesn't feel forced。 The setting and people are just so lovely。 They feel real to me。 Can anything better be said about a book? You're a talented man, Mr Osman。 I love crime novels。 I have loved them ever since I was a kid。 But this one is a gem。 The characters are so well written and contoured。 The plot is intricate, but doesn't feel forced。 The setting and people are just so lovely。 They feel real to me。 Can anything better be said about a book? You're a talented man, Mr Osman。 。。。more

‘So you’re a nun now, Elizabeth?’Elizabeth nods quickly, raising a finger to acknowledge that this is a good question。 ‘Donna, like any modern woman, I am any number of things, as and when the need arises。 We have to be chameleons, don’t we?’

Uma história de crime e mistério leve e divertida, com personagens cativantes (daqueles que você sente que vira amigo) mas que consegue manter o suspense até o final。 Leitura para se divertir e descansar!

This book was absolutely lovely。 I didn’t want it to end。 I fell into cozy mysteries about 2 years ago, and while they’re so wonderful and quite idyllic (despite the murdering), they’re mostly pretty disposable - not the best writing in the world (not necessarily a swipe, just kind of a reality)。 They serve a purpose, they’re an escape。 But The Thursday Murder Club is different。 And of course that may have to do with the author not being a typical cozy writer - he’s an English celebrity。 So with This book was absolutely lovely。 I didn’t want it to end。 I fell into cozy mysteries about 2 years ago, and while they’re so wonderful and quite idyllic (despite the murdering), they’re mostly pretty disposable - not the best writing in the world (not necessarily a swipe, just kind of a reality)。 They serve a purpose, they’re an escape。 But The Thursday Murder Club is different。 And of course that may have to do with the author not being a typical cozy writer - he’s an English celebrity。 So with that knowledge and some of the more critical reviews I kind of went into it with no real expectations。 And I was surprisingly delighted。 TTMC is a tender, funny, and sweet story。 I couldn’t get enough of it, and I dragged it out over a week - I couldn’t wait to visit with each character every night after work。 What really spoke to me was the commentary on life as one gets older - it’s hard and comes at you, and it dealt with that so tenderly and so very real。 I just loved it。 The writing, the stories, the characters, the variety of subplots。 It was all so good。 I’m sure I’ll listen to this again down the road。 I can’t wait for the send book in September! 。。。more
